When is an Addiction Intervention Right?
Whens Enough Enough?
You think it might be time for an addiction intervention? Money missing? Have to bail anyone out of jail? Visited the ER lately? If these things are happening in your loved one’s life, trust me, its past time for an intervention. Families will live with the addiction problem for years, not knowing there can be success in intervention and not realizing that those that perform interventions are successful nearly 95% of the time immediately and 99% percent of the time eventually.
Addiction Intervention and The Myth of “Rock Bottom”
Its never to early for an addiction intervention. Time and time again addiction counselors at addictionwatch.com are told, “they have to hit bottom’ before addiction treatment will be effective. That statement is made out of frustration and is a myth. It’s like watching a drowning victim go down for the third time and having bystanders rally around and say “all he’s got to do swim outta there”. Nothing could be farther from the truth.
No one will ever enter a drug or alcohol rehabilitation program doing back flips into the facility. It’s admitting defeat and feeling like a total failure, no one wants to do that and will usually do down swinging when they don’t have to. Performing and addiction intervention saves lives.
If a drug or alcohol addict were capable of making sound decisions that were pro-survival there would not be the need for an addiction intervention in the first place. By the nature of drug addiction and its affects on the function of the brain a drug or alcohol addict is handicapped and unable to think clearly from that fact alone. Addiction intervention is a fundamental part of the rehabilitation process.
Addiction Leads to Being an Underachiever
Unfortunately most drug or alcohol addicts who suffer from a sever drug or alcohol addiction, and need an intervention, are some of the most capable people in society. This fact makes them that much harder to help as they are accomplished intelligent beings. Although suffering from addiction and desperately needing an intervention, many drug or alcohol addicts will find it hard to accept defeat and failure and admit someone else can help them. Many suffering from addiction do not consider themselves to be like those “junkies”.
Just keep in mind it’s never to early to perform an intervention and help the one you love. There is really no sense waiting until your loved “hits bottom” when you can be proactive and the bring the bottom to them in a controlled manner. With this we mean the drug addict should understand the unacceptable irresponsible behavior is not okay and the family or loved one is the one who calls the shots, not the drug or alcohol addict. Drug addiction intervention sets the course for permanent addiction recovery.
