Addiction Relapse

Inpatient drug alcohol addiction treatment

Addiction relapse is one of the most confusing and demoralizing things that can happen to anyone who has enjoyed sobriety for any length of time. It results in stacking failure on top of failure; anyone who has experienced this knows what I am talking about.

Many people due to their unwillingness to fully confront addiction simply refuse to enter inpatient drug treatment for reasons that to them seem plausible but once looked at from an exterior viewpoint seem small in comparison to handling the addiction problem. Although outpatient drug treatment is something its not all that successful and even some even inpatient addiction treatment centers leave a lot to be desired when it comes to quality addiction treatment.

Addicts who need drug treatment will increase chances of success by enrolling into residential drug treatment of at least 90 days or longer greatly lessen the possibility of addiction relapse.

Outpatient drug treatment is generally for first time or short time drug or alcohol abusers, and often even getting someone to attend those consistently leads to addiction relapse due to the density of addicts in one location. Fully understanding addiction and all the components therein really helps to get effective addiction treatment.

A large percentage of addicts with alcohol problems are often upscale business people and will usually will not seek inpatient alcohol treatment due to the social strata they are in, using the job or business as an excuse. In these cases several instances of alcohol addiction relapse will occur before inpatient alcohol treatment is sought.

There are about four varieties of inpatient drug and alcohol treatment throughout the United States each having its own methods of handling addiction treatment. Most inpatient drug treatment centers are of the twelve step variety and typically 30 days long. Unfortunately these programs achieve about a 2-8% success rate.

If you are looking into residential drug treatment and going to the trouble of putting everything on hold to handle your addiction problem I think you could understand making it count the first time around. Many people have considerations on time when entering inpatient drug treatment which usually ends up with a huge loss and wasting the time they did spend in the residential addiction treatment program.

Outpatient drug treatment can be a breeding ground for further addiction relapse, if you don’t believe me you should talk to some of the addicts whom I have had the pleasure of helping. Often after completing inpatient alcohol or drug treatment they look back and realize the foolishness of attempting any other kind of treatment besides drug free inpatient treatment that does not use replacement drugs and is sufficient in length ( 3 months) Doing so greatly decreases the chance of addiction relapse and further failure.

Addiction Relapse- Does it have to occur?

The term “addiction relapse” is both widely used in the field of addiction treatment and embedded into the minds of most drug addicts or alcoholics fortunate enough to enter some form of addiction treatment in the US for chemical dependency. The “treated” person or drug addict is informed that with chemical dependency, addiction relapse can occur at any time and that from moment to moment one must be alerted to the “triggers” that may cause this trip back to the hell of addiction relapse and addiction. “One day at a time” and, “you are only an arms length away from your next drink” become the motto and reverberate through twelve step addiction treatment programs and AA meetings across the country. As and attempt to help the concept of addiction relapse is associated with the idea that chemical dependency or addiction is a disease leaving many to "white knuckle it” through each day.
