Addiction Treatment Addiction Recovery

GlaxoSmithKline pays 1$ Billion in fines for Paxil

Paxil Suicides and birth defects are affordable
As and addiction counsellor and one who has educated thousands on the dangers of all drugs it never ceases to amaze me about the countless “ snake oils” and elixirs that have been around for literally hundreds of years. These so called cures are again prescribed by the Medical professionals as a solution to many problems plaguing society today, specifically drug addiction and the need for addiction treatment.

Paxil, another so called in solution in a long line of snake oil remedies has long been touted as the cure for many problems raking in enough dough to make suicides caused by the drug affordable and figured into the budget for the drug maker by simply shifting money around and reducing insurance policies etc.

Paxil, while not marketed as a cure for drug addiction, was used by many medical professionals in addiction treatment centers across the country as a cure for depression, a side affect of drug and alcohol abuse and was supposed to stabilize the neurotransmitters flow in the brain, and is now known to increase suicidal thoughts and behaviors.

Glaxo ran aground when children, after taking the drug for a short while committed suicide and it was found later to have suppressed evidence of suicidal thoughts and behaviors in its studies. US district Judge Michael Davis in Minneapolis said insurers stated Glaxo knew the drug “was neither safe nor effective for the treatment of depression for person under the age of 18.

This data found in an article on Bloomberg.com with more emphasis on how much the stocks rose and fell as a result of the 450 suicide cases that were settled with the 1$ billion dollar fines. Glaxo could pay up to $1.5 billion once the estimated 600 pending birth defects cases settle.
Paxil was prescribed to many people in desperate search of addiction help as a means to feel better, and deal with emotional issues associated with drug addiction. Many of those needing addiction treatments are still in search of effective help.

While Glaxo never admitted any liability a spokeperson for GSK simply stated they wanted to avoid any future litigation costs. TV ads now appear openly and brazenly promoting two thirds of the  population who take these so called magic potions still suffer from the same malady and should take an ADDITIONAL anti depressant. Apparently there is more money to be made in this drug trade.

In the field of addition treatment there is no magic cure or pill, those looking for an easy way out of the trap climb out high enough to fall into another set by lies and deception for profiteering. Hopefully this will continue the motion set forth not long ago by Eli Lilly in its false advertisement of Zyprexa, and cause drug makers to take more responsibility in the “collateral damage” created from their so called magic potions.

For those suffering from addiction and needing treatment, getting over a drug addiction, takes hard work and desire by those that suffer from addiction. It’s not an easy road but it can be done!
