Heroin Addiction Treatment

Heroin addiction treatment needs somewhat of a different approach than other addiction treatment programs. Many times a heroin addict is so afraid of the withdrawal if confronting heroin addiction treatment means confronting a large amount of pain and agony. Heroin addiction can begin as a gradual approach in the drug abuse process, but as time goes on the physical damage is done and by the time this is realized its way to late. Heroin addiction treatment and withdrawal, commonly known as detox, is unlike addiction treatment from other drugs such as cocaine or methamphetamine.

Heroin is a semi synthetic opioid derived from poppy seeds and at its inception or creation was used to help people handle problems with pain. Heroin was developed and marketed as a replacement for morphine and was not supposed to be as addicting. Well this is now known not to be true and as the mounting heroin addiction treatment cases rose it soon was outlawed and is no longer dispensed legally.

Heroin addiction is difficult to overcome since it is both physically addictive and psychologically addictive. Heroin addiction treatment requires helping someone to overcome the physical addiction first, meaning withdrawal or detox, and then the mental emotional addiction.

Heroin addiction treatment starts with detox or withdrawal which is like no other drug withdrawal. Heroin withdrawal creates a more intense feeling of pain as the body will experience shock. In short, since heroin is a painkiller its use deadens the nervous system, which is the system the body uses to communicate. The withdrawal from heroin is similar to having the flu only much worse. It’s as if the addict’s body has been asleep and now experiencing an awakening.

Heroin addiction treatment also requires restoring nutritional deficiencies such as calcium and magnesium, and a host of the other vitamins that has burned up in the heroin addiction. Heroin also is recognized by the body as a toxin, therefore is treated as such. This means as the body processes the drug via the liver and kidneys it changes into a fat bonding particle causing residues of the drug to be left behind in fatty tissue. This heroin residue build up increases the toxicity level in the body, continues the vitamin burn up causing the addict to feel worse and need the drug all the more. Successful heroin addiction treatment removes these toxins with a purification program.

Heroin addiction treatment centers have used a variety of drug rehabilitation philosophies and tried to change treatment programs for the addict needs. The success of heroin addiction treatment depends on the ability of the heroin addict to confront his issues in the drug rehabilitation center. The appropriate addiction rehabilitation program is important, but the addict’s determination and commitment to the rehabilitation process to achieve addiction treatment must be true. Removing all the possible barriers that would keep and addict from successful addiction treatment should include complete body rehabilitation as well.
