Addiction Treatment Trends

A recent study sponsored by the National Institute of Drug Abuse, Monitoring the Future Survey is used as a tool to indicate obviously as per the title the future of addiction and addiction treatment trends in the United States.

Fortunately the study shows a decline or stall in the gateway drugs like alcohol, marijuana and tobacco. Although 31 million people, over 12 percent of the population twelve or older reported driving under the influence in last year. Tobacco use has remained at the lowest point in years although unchanged over the last year. The decline of marijuana use since the 1990’s stalled and remains unchanged as well. Addiction rehabilitation admissions for these drugs have maintained an even trend, although these areas are still of concern.

Addiction to prescription drugs is of course on the rise; just ask any parent whose child in need of addiction intervention or substance abuse treatment how this came to pass and many will tell you I thought nothing of the pills that came up missing, or I knew nothing of “pharming parties” until it was too late. Addiction intervention and substance abuse treatment for prescription drug addiction is an arduous task with the need for medical detox often preceding drug rehabilitation programs due to the dramatic physical effect the drugs have on the individual.

To addiction counselors involved with addiction treatment or addiction rehabilitation on a daily basis the trends of addiction are relatively easy to determine. Admissions into the addiction treatment program are fantastic ways to track these as well trends in the media. Watch Television of an evening and see the barrage of commercials advertising solutions to life’s problems in the form of a drug.

Another method of tracking addiction treatment trends is keeping an eye on legislation and the fine print involved. For instance laws passed in Florida have cleared the path for pain management clinics to open up shop virtually on every corner in various counties. This happens to be a state with probably the highest per capita of senior that comprise 13% of the nation’s population but yet are responsible for 1/3 of the prescription drug use.

This elderly population is also at risk of drug abuse, addiction and in need of addiction treatment or addiction rehabilitation. These pain management clinics perpetuate the need for addiction treatment and drug addiction rehabilitation programs and are commonly known as “pill mills”. Addiction intervention is made significantly more difficult when medical field manufactures drug addicts to this degree and in this fashion.

Many parents who are unaware of the effects of drugs are shocked at the audacity of many medical professionals who have the tendency to ignore pleas for help. AddictionWatch counselors have spoken to numerous families who report writing letters or making phone calls to the prescribing doctors only to fall on deaf ears.
