Florida Substance Abuse and Addiction Problems

Although we have searched for more recent reports that are usually generated by the NSDUH it appears 2007-2008 is the most recent report compiled. As we mentioned earlier, 386,000 people needed but were not able to receive treatment. Fifty Six thousand were between 12-18 years of age and 330,000 addicts were 18 or older.

With the privatization of prisons the focus seems to be more on incarceration than drug treatment in Florida. The number of those arrested for drug offenses has risen steadily over the last decade according to the Drug Enforcement Administration.  There are a number of substance abuse problems in Florida. Below are various drugs and the most recent statistics.

Alcohol – Alcohol still remains a tremendous problem in Florida and the rest of the country for that matter. Over 1 million people needed alcohol treatment in Florida but were unable to receive it according to the NSDUH 07-08 reports. Underage drinking costs Florida residents $4.5 billion in 2007. Florida ranks 11th out of the 50 states for the cost per youth in underage drinking, about $2770 per each youth annually.

Marijuana – More people receive treatment for marijuana addiction in Florida than any other illicit drug. Many states are relaxing laws aimed at the decriminalization of marijuana and ending the drug war, states with medical marijuana laws have experienced a 1/3 increase in marijuana addiction treatment admissions. Marijuana treatment in Florida is only going to become more and more of a problem.

The National Survey on Drug Use and Health reports there were nearly 1.5 million people who abused marijuana in the 2007-2008 survey. Over 350 people a day try marijuana for the first time in Florida. Approximately 15% of Florida high school students report abusing marijuana in the last 30 days 2005-2007. In 2006, there were 46,527 marijuana plants destroyed by the DEA.

Prescription Drugs – Prescribed opioid painkillers are the second leading cause of addicts seeking drug rehab in Florida. Prescription drug abuse has greatly increased and is a serious threat to the health and safety of Florida citizens. The Florida Medical Examiners report that five people die in Florida daily as a direct result of prescription drug overdoses. Florida has long been known for the availability of prescription drugs and where the term “pill mill’ originated.

Investigations indicate that diversion of hydrocodone products such as Vicodin® and oxycodone products such as OxyContin® continues to be a problem in Florida. Although the primary drug threat in Florida is cocaine, prescription drug abuse is on the rise. The Drug Enforcement Agency is going to great links to help combat prescription drug abuse with little to no success.

Cocaine – after reading the above information on marijuana and alcohol it may be hard to believe cocaine is considered the biggest problem in Florida. Cocaine is found throughout Florida in a variety of quantities ranging to a single gram to 1000 grams (kilogram). Drug dealers peddling crack cocaine are found in several Florida cities that include Orlando, Gainesville, Fort Myers, Jacksonville, Fort Pierce and West Palm Beach.  Over eight percent of Florida high school students report abusing cocaine at least once in their lifetime. Over 2,000 people sought the help of a Florida drug rehab for cocaine addiction. (2007-2008 NSDUH)

Methamphetamine – Methamphetamine has impacted the majority of Florida’s 67 counties and use is widespread. In 2007 there were only about 100 meth lab incidents in Florida. By 2009 the number of meth lab incidents rose by 148%.  Most of the methamphetamine addicts who need drug rehab and treatment get their drugs from Mexican drug gangs or motorcycle gangs. (DEA)

Heroin – The majority of the heroin entering Florida is destined for markets outside the state along the East Coast. It should be known that Florida does not have a significant heroin abuse problem. Although with rising prescription drug addiction in Florida many feel as law enforcement step up efforts and legislation changes laws heroin addiction will increase resulting from the large number of prescription drug addicts turning to heroin.

Club Drugs – MDMA ( aka ecstasy) is the most predominantly available club drug in Florida. MDMA is found at clubs and rave parties in all parts of Florida, and is commonly abused with other illegal and/or prescription drugs. GHB is commonly abused in Florida, as well as two precursors – GBL and Butanediol (BD).

Letters of Thanks

"I have to tell you I was not ready to accept what you had to say, at all. I couldn't believe nor did I like what I was hearing. At first you really made me mad, but as things progressed what you were telling me became ever so true. My husband's alcoholism was tearing our family apart. Thanks for your honesty and your willingness to put up with my unbelievable attitude. Its people like you who make the world go round, only in a saner manner! Thanks again! " - DH

"I had no idea why my son, who have watched go from the most gracious caring kid, to a lying thieving con artist who I didn't want to wipe my feet on. Heroin addiction has to be the worst thing a family can go through, not only did you guide me through what is probably the worst experience I have ever had, you followed up to make sure we were doing okay. You and the counselors at AddictionWatch are truly an asset to society." - HS

"When my daughter finally appeared on our doorstep, thanks to your advice we knew exactly what to do. I felt as though I have known you for years, and we are forever grateful to the knowledge we have gained through your service. My daughter's prescription addiction, lead to a heroin addiction and she was doing unimaginable things to support her habit; it was a life of hell. She has been in the program you referred us to and we are already seeing drastic changes for the better. Thanks so much!" - BC
