Hawaii Addiction and Substance Abuse Problems

If you are in doubt about the need for drug rehab and addiction treatment services in Hawaii take a look at recent surveys. According to 2008-2009 data from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), approximately 83,000 (8%) of Hawaii citizens (ages 12 or older) reported past month use of an illicit drug. Additional 2008-2009 NSDUH results indicate that 24,000 (2.37%) Hawaii citizens reported illicit drug dependence or abuse within the past year. Approximately 15,000 (1.48%) reported past year illicit drug dependence to drugs like methamphetamine, marijuana, cocaine and heroin.

Alcohol – Although other drugs like ICE and marijuana grab the attention of health officials and law enforcement, alcohol is one of the biggest drug problems in Hawaii. As of 2004 there were 78,590 people alcohol dependent and needing alcohol addiction treatment center. In 2012, 1,035 people entered an alcohol rehab for alcohol treatment. An additional 1,023 alcoholics entered treatment abusing alcohol with a secondary drug.

Over 500,000 people in Hawaii abuse alcohol that are aged 18 and older and just under 6,000 high school students are reported to have drank alcohol on school property in the last 30 days. If you don’t think Hawaii needs alcohol rehabilitation and addiction treatment you might think again.

Methamphetamine – In Hawaii the drug of choice is Crystal Methamphetamine or “ICE”. For the last 25 years this drugs has been considered the biggest threat to the state. Methamphetamine has had a devastating impact on the economy. Crystal Meth has had even bigger impact on families in Hawaii. Street violence and property crimes have skyrocketed as a result. Law enforcement reports the drug is being shipped in from suppliers in Mexico and California.

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration Treatment Episode Data Set reports 2,094 addicts sought meth addiction treatment in Hawaii during 2012.

Marijuana – Marijuana is widely available and abused in Hawaii. Marijuana runs close second to methamphetamine when it comes to addicts seeking treatment. The marijuana problem is only going to get worse. There were 3,240 medical marijuana patients in 2007. It seems contradictory to report that approximately 390,000 (37.8%) Hawaii citizens are reported to consider using marijuana once a month was a great risk. This is odd particularly when a 2009 survey of Hawaii high school students reported nearly 30% reported trying marijuana at least once.

Hawaii, like other states with medical marijuana has experienced a sharp increase in marijuana addiction treatment admissions. There are just fewer than 70,000 people in Hawaii who abuse marijuana aged 12 older. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration reports nearly 2,000 people sought treatment for marijuana addiction in 2012. This is nearly twice as high as alcohol.

Cocaine – Cocaine is present in Hawaii in powder form primarily. Cocaine is popularly abused with heroin and marijuana. Tourism is the main reason for the cocaine demand in Hawaii. The cocaine seized in Hawaii is shipped in using a specific method of Ziploc bags or fibrous paper bags and taped heavily with clear duct tape.

2012 reports indicate only 150 people sought cocaine addiction treatment in Hawaii in 2012. This would follow the above information regarding cocaine abuse and tourism in Hawaii. Most the cocaine is abused by tourist, those that would seek treatment elsewhere.

Opiates and Prescription Drugs – Most of the heroin seized in Hawaii is black tar heroin. Hydrocodone is one of the most abused pharmaceutical drugs in Hawaii. Opiate painkillers are readily available in the counties of Honolulu and Hawaii. Over 85,000 are prescribed each and every day in Hawaii the majority of which are prescription opioid painkillers. Many people are getting hooked on drugs like Oxycontin and Hydrocodone and moving onto heroin because it is less expensive.

Club Drugs – The abuse of club drugs like MDMA, (Ecstasy), Gamma-Hydroxybutyric Acid (GHB) and LSD or Lysergic Acid Diethylamide is increasing in Hawaii. There is a very large and condensed military population on the island of Oahu primarily responsible. Unfortunately these drugs are consumed by military personnel, teenagers and young adults attending dance clubs and raves. These drugs are responsible for several deaths across the state.
