You may think of Idaho as a frontier state, fairly rugged, and possibly removed from alcohol and drug addiction problems. At one time you would have been right but now not so much. Today Idaho is at the top of the list when it comes to producing meth addicts. Recent reports show Idaho in the top ten in several drug abuse categories. A big concern is the prescription drug addiction in Idaho problem.

Idaho has a few good sized cities but is mainly a vast mountainous region and sparsely populated. This does not mean Idaho is a stranger to drug abuse problems or drug trafficking activity. Drug cartels from Mexico find ways to get marijuana, methamphetamine, heroin and cocaine into Idaho.

Idaho being one of the last frontiers for drug gangs and dealers is a thing of the past. Idaho treatment centers are needed all the more. Addiction is a far reaching problem and Idaho is not immune. According to 2008-2009 NSDUH data, approximately 33,000 Idaho citizens reported needing but not receiving treatment for illicit drug use within the past year. These alarming numbers go to show the severity of Idaho’s drug epidemic.

Idaho drug treatment centers do exist but in comparison to other more populated states, services are few and far between. There are less than 80 drug and alcohol treatment programs in Idaho. Here at AddictionWatch.com we have a directory of drug rehab and treatment centers in Idaho and elsewhere. It contains thousands of drug rehab centers or alcohol treatment programs of various types around the country.

Idaho Addiction and Substance Abuse Problems

As we have mentioned, more drug rehab services are needed in Idaho. There are approximately 35,000 Idaho citizens who reported abuse of an illicit drug in the past year. Just about 22,000 people in Idaho reported a dependence on an illicit drug.

443,000 (37.85%) Idaho citizens reported that using marijuana occasionally (once a month) was a “great risk,” according to 2008-2009 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) data. Even more alarming data collected by the NSDUH shows that of Idaho’s 12-24 year olds, 87% reported that regular methamphetamine use was a “great risk,” 85% reported regular heroin use was a “great risk” and 84% reported regular cocaine use was a “great risk”.

Drug trafficking cartels from Mexico are Idaho’s biggest threat when it comes to drug activity. These organizations are responsible for the import of methamphetamine, marijuana and cocaine.  The Idaho panhandle bordering Canada is a prime location for drug smuggling. Marijuana smuggled in from British Columbia is being seized by federal authorities. Approximately 1,323.5 kilograms of marijuana, as well as 7.0 kilograms of cocaine were seized by Federal agencies in Idaho during 2009.

Although there is a significant amount of drug trafficking into Idaho, internally there is a fair amount of trafficking with marijuana and methamphetamine production at high levels. During 2008, more than 36,000 cultivated marijuana plants were eradicated in Idaho under the Drug Enforcement Administration Domestic Cannabis Eradication/Suppression Program. During 2009, law enforcement agencies in Idaho seized 42.5 pounds, 10.1 gallons and 285 dosage units of amphetamines/methamphetamine.

As of December 2008, there were 7,355 incarcerated drug offenders within the Idaho Department of Corrections (IDOC). There were 12,959 IDOC drug offenders being supervised in the community as of December 2007 (10,567 on probation and 2,392 on parole). Many of these addicts were or will be required to attend an Idaho drug rehab or alcohol addiction treatment center as part of mandatory sentence.

Letters of Thanks

"I have to tell you I was not ready to accept what you had to say, at all. I couldn't believe nor did I like what I was hearing. At first you really made me mad, but as things progressed what you were telling me became ever so true. My husband's alcoholism was tearing our family apart. Thanks for your honesty and your willingness to put up with my unbelievable attitude. Its people like you who make the world go round, only in a saner manner! Thanks again! " - DH

"I had no idea why my son, who have watched go from the most gracious caring kid, to a lying thieving con artist who I didn't want to wipe my feet on. Heroin addiction has to be the worst thing a family can go through, not only did you guide me through what is probably the worst experience I have ever had, you followed up to make sure we were doing okay. You and the counselors at AddictionWatch are truly an asset to society." - HS

"When my daughter finally appeared on our doorstep, thanks to your advice we knew exactly what to do. I felt as though I have known you for years, and we are forever grateful to the knowledge we have gained through your service. My daughter's prescription addiction, lead to a heroin addiction and she was doing unimaginable things to support her habit; it was a life of hell. She has been in the program you referred us to and we are already seeing drastic changes for the better. Thanks so much!" - BC
