Iowa Substance Abuse and Addiction Issues

As you can well imagine there are a significant number of people who abuse drugs and alcohol in Iowa and need help. Efforts to curb methamphetamine production have proved worthwhile but Iowa treatment centers are still seeing evidence of its devastation. Meth addiction has again picked up speed and with the widespread abuse of prescription drugs Iowa treatment centers are packed. Marijuana is responsible for the majority of treatment admissions in Iowa.

Here is a snapshot of the statistics of drugs of abuse in Iowa. These statistics are provided by Treatment Episode Data Set and National Survey on Drug Use and Health. Both of these reporting agencies are sponsored by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration.

Marijuana – Many people argue marijuana is not addictive or a gateway drug. Here are marijuana statistics for Iowa disproving that theory.

  • 29% of all treatment admissions were for marijuana addiction (8,122)
  • 868,000 citizens reported using marijuana occasionally (once a month) was a “great risk”.
  • 28,000 people aged 12 or older tried marijuana for the first time.
  • 30% of Iowa 12th grade students have abused marijuana at least once in their lifetime.
  • 250,000 people aged 12 or older used marijuana in the previous year.
  • People who start abusing marijuana by age 15 are 5 times more likely to need treatment for cocaine addiction.

Treatment Experts speculate 15-20% of first time users will go on to develop an addiction to marijuana and/or harder drugs. That equates to 5,600 new addicts in Iowa caused by marijuana. Relaxed marijuana laws will only make things worse.

Alcohol – Alcohol abuse in Iowa is a significant problem and causes more deaths than any other drug. For the first time alcohol comes in second behind marijuana for treatment admission in Iowa for 2012.

  • 25.5% (7,125) of all treatment admissions were for alcohol.
  • Alcohol with a secondary drug accounted for an additional 19% or 5,306 people being admitted for treatment.
  • 196,000 people in Iowa have a dependence on alcohol.
  • 96,000 people aged 12 or older binge drank 30 days prior to the survey.
  • Underage drinking cost Iowa citizens $689 million in 2007.

Methamphetamine – Meth addiction statistics were dropping as of 2008 only to pick up speed with increased drug trafficking activity and methods of manufacture. Thankfully they continue to be lower than the peak in 2004 when incidents reached nearly 1,500. Smaller one pot labs have swept the nation causing meth lab incidents in Iowa to increase 48% from 2008 to 2009. In 2009, 5% of Iowa 12th graders reported abusing methamphetamine at least once during their lifetime.

Cocaine – Both powder cocaine and crack cocaine is available throughout Iowa. Crack cocaine is found primarily in the inner city urban areas. Cocaine abuse is high for 12th grader students in Iowa as reports show 7.5% have tried the drug at least once.

44,000 Iowa residents have abused powder cocaine or crack cocaine at least once in their life, while 25,000 abused cocaine of some form in the last year. It’s difficult to tell where addicts are getting treatment for cocaine addiction in Iowa. Cocaine accounted for just 2.5% all treatment admissions.

Heroin – Heroin addiction and activity take place for the most part in eastern Iowa.  Heroin addiction and abuse is not considered a major threat in comparison with other drugs like marijuana, alcohol and methamphetamine.

Prescription Drugs – The abuse of prescription drugs is a big problem everywhere. In Iowa these drug account for a very small amount of treatment admissions however. Many sources of information report the diversion of hydrocodone products like Vicodin® and oxycodone products such as OxyContin® are on the rise. Benzodiazepines, alprazolam and codeine are known among the most commonly abused prescription drugs in Iowa

Club Drugs – MDMA (Ecstasy) continues to be a huge party drug in Iowa. Surprisingly, nearly ten percent Iowa’s high school students are reported to have abused inhalants at least once in their lifetime. Over the counter bath salts is now the known rage amongst high school kids in Iowa. Legislatures are racing to keep up with current designer drug trends for drugs like K2/Spice, Bath Salts, and Salvia all of which can be purchased over the counter at local head shops.

Letters of Thanks

"I have to tell you I was not ready to accept what you had to say, at all. I couldn't believe nor did I like what I was hearing. At first you really made me mad, but as things progressed what you were telling me became ever so true. My husband's alcoholism was tearing our family apart. Thanks for your honesty and your willingness to put up with my unbelievable attitude. Its people like you who make the world go round, only in a saner manner! Thanks again! " - DH

"I had no idea why my son, who have watched go from the most gracious caring kid, to a lying thieving con artist who I didn't want to wipe my feet on. Heroin addiction has to be the worst thing a family can go through, not only did you guide me through what is probably the worst experience I have ever had, you followed up to make sure we were doing okay. You and the counselors at AddictionWatch are truly an asset to society." - HS

"When my daughter finally appeared on our doorstep, thanks to your advice we knew exactly what to do. I felt as though I have known you for years, and we are forever grateful to the knowledge we have gained through your service. My daughter's prescription addiction, lead to a heroin addiction and she was doing unimaginable things to support her habit; it was a life of hell. She has been in the program you referred us to and we are already seeing drastic changes for the better. Thanks so much!" - BC
