Kansas Substance Abuse and Addiction Problems

With the scourge of addiction problems across the country it’s no wonder the call for more drug rehab programs throughout Kansas rings loud and clear. There is an ever present need for Kansas treatment centers due to 202,000 drug addicts or alcoholics in Kansas that were unable to receive the help they so desperately needed.

Additional 2010-2011 NSDUH results indicate that 59,000 (2.57%) Kansas citizens reported abuse of or dependence on illicit drugs. Over 100,000 people abused prescription pain killers for non-medical reasons. Here is a breakdown of substance abuse problems in Kansas.

Marijuana– Marijuana is by far the most abused drug in Kansas and responsible for the largest percentage of treatment admission. In Kansas, marijuana is head and shoulders above alcohol when it comes to addiction problems.

Approximately 832,000 (37.07%) Kansas citizens reported that using marijuana occasionally (once a month) was a “great risk”. Marijuana remains the most widely abused illegal substance in Kansas. With Colorado legalizing marijuana, addiction to the drug is going to become even more prevalent.

As it stands now, marijuana grown indoors using hydroponic methods costs much more and is in greater demand. NSDUH results show 27,000 people (aged 12 and over) try marijuana for the first time each year in Kansas with 13,000 (30 per day) being between 12-17 years old. These numbers are significantly higher than the 2008-2009 NSDUH report at 23,000 and 11,000 respectively.  3,937 people received treatment for marijuana addiction on 2012. Addiction to marijuana accounted for almost 30% of all Kansas treatment admissions that year.

Crystal Methamphetamine – For the first time in many years methamphetamine addiction is responsible for more treatment admissions than alcohol. 2,308 people entered Kansas drug rehab centers for methamphetamine addiction in 2012. Most of the methamphetamine distributed in Kansas is brought in by the drug cartels from Mexico. Smaller one pot mobile labs are now dominating the clandestine meth activity in many states and Kansas is at the top of the list. Meth lab incidents increased from 2007 to 2008 and remained steady over the last few years.

Alcohol– NSDUH statistics report 178,000 alcoholics aged 12 or older needed but did not receive alcohol addiction treatment in Kansas last year. 187,000 people exhibited a dependence on alcohol or had incidents of abuse during the past year with 93,000 binge drinking.

Kansas ranks 18th in cost per youth for underage drinking costing Kansas taxpayers $727 million in 2007. 785 youth between 12-20 years old were admitted to alcohol addiction treatment centers in Kansas that same year, accounting for 12% of the total substance abuse treatment admissions.

Cocaine – Cocaine addiction is a big problem in Kansas just not as prevalent. Cocaine addiction is responsible for 804 people addiction treatment admissions in 2012. Cocaine is present in powder and crack forms and a variety of quantities ranging from a gram to kilograms. The supply of cocaine come from the Texas and California areas brought across the border Mexican organizations. The majority of cocaine is converted to crack and sold in urban areas primarily around Kansas City.

Prescription Drugs – Due to the prescription drug epidemic sweeping the nation in 2010 Kansas implemented its prescription drug monitoring program. The 2010-2011 National Survey On Drug Use and Health report 105,000 people abused prescription pain relievers for non-medical reasons. Prescription pain killers were responsible for nearly 1,000 people entering treatment 2012. Oxycontin is the prescription drug of choice for most addicts in Kansas.

Heroin- Heroin addiction and its treatment are of very little consequence in Kansas. Not to say heroin addiction is not a ferocious beast to deal it’s just not that common in Kansas. The heroin that is found in Kansas is Mexican black tar and comes in small quantities. There is virtually no heroin presence in western Kansas and limited supply in Topeka.

Kansas drug treatment programs do see drug abuse involving club drugs like MDMA (ecstasy). Ecstasy has been found in limited quantities throughout the state. Club drugs remain popular with younger users, such as teenagers and young adults, and also remain very popular in the homosexual community.

"I have to tell you I was not ready to accept what you had to say, at all. I couldn't believe nor did I like what I was hearing. "I had no idea why my son, who have watched go from the most gracious caring kid, to a lying thieving con artist who I didn't want to wipe my feet on. Heroin addiction has to be the worst thing a family can go through, not only did you guide me through what is probably the worst experience I have ever had, you followed up to make sure we were doing okay. You and the counselors at AddictionWatch are truly an asset to society." - HS

"When my daughter finally appeared on our doorstep, thanks to your advice we knew exactly what to do. I felt as though I have known you for years, and we are forever grateful to the knowledge we have gained through your service. My daughter's prescription addiction, lead to a heroin addiction and she was doing unimaginable things to support her habit; it was a life of hell. She has been in the program you referred us to and we are already seeing drastic changes for the better. Thanks so much!" - BC
