Kentucky Substance Abuse and Addiction Problems

More people are entering Kentucky drug rehab centers seeking treatment for addictions to legal drugs than illicit drugs. Kentucky leads the nation in prescription drug abuse and methamphetamine addiction. Alcohol has always been at the forefront of Kentucky substance abuse problems too. Drug rehab in Kentucky is needed now more than ever.

Prescription Drugs – The eastern part of Kentucky is of primary concern when it comes to prescription drug addiction. There are targeted areas that lead the country in per capita distribution of narcotic pain killers. So much so that back in 2005 lawmakers became proactive by passing legislation requiring internet pharmacies selling drugs in Kentucky to register with the Kentucky Board of Pharmacy.

These laws tightened the control of prescription drug distribution tremendously and implemented severe penalties for violation. As a result, fraudulent purchasing of prescription drugs from out-of -state Internet pharmacies, was drastically reduced.

Thankfully, the abuse of prescription pain killers has dropped significantly. In 2008, 231,000 people were reported to abuse prescription pain reliever for non-medical reasons, this compared to 161,000 in 2010.  There were 4,887 prescription drug addicts who were able to receive the services of Kentucky treatment centers in 2012.

Alcohol – Although Kentucky has significant problems in many areas concerning substance abuse and addiction, alcohol is at the top of the list. As an example, 748,000 people aged 12 or older are reported to have binge drank in the 30 days previous to the 2010-11 National Survey on Drug Use and Health survey.

Nearly 200,000 Kentucky residents are known to have at least a dependence on alcohol and there are 161,000 alcoholics who need but treatment. Thankfully 2,853 people were admitted to alcohol treatment centers in Kentucky during 2012. To give you an idea of the disproportion in numbers, that’s less than 2% of the addicted population. In 2007 underage drinking cost Kentucky citizens $792 million dollars.

Marijuana – Marijuana is among the most significant drug threats in Kentucky. Tests during 2009 showed the average THC content of eradicated marijuana in Kentucky was 15%. There is hope for some as reports show 1.5 million (42.3%) Kentucky citizens consider using marijuana occasionally (once a month)  a “great risk” and could lead to bigger problems.

The local production of marijuana far exceeds what Kentuckians can consume. Being situated within range of larger metropolitan areas, Kentucky drug dealers have easy access to larger markets in Illinois, New York, Indiana, Michigan, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia and Washington D.C. Pro-marijuana activists pushing legalization are only going to make the problem worse, its alarming to know 48% of Kentucky high school seniors surveyed in 2009 reported abusing marijuana at least once in their lifetime.

Methamphetamine – Clandestine Meth Labs in Kentucky have skyrocketed 298% in the last three years from 441 in 2008 to 1,747 in 2011. Nearly one in ten high school seniors reported abusing methamphetamine at least once in their lifetime. New methods of clandestine meth labs known as “shake and bake” have allowed for much smaller yet easier to manufacture production of methamphetamine to occur. Meth addiction accounted for 5.7% of admissions to treatment centers in Kentucky during 2012.

Cocaine – Cocaine can be found in both forms throughout Kentucky, with powder cocaine being the most prominent form. The purity of cocaine in Kentucky remains high and consistency has been stable for the last several years. Prices are about par with other areas of the country at $100-150 a gram and kilograms prices ranging from $16,000 – $28,000. 8.3 % of high school students in Kentucky have abused cocaine at least once in their lifetime.1, 060 cocaine addicts entered drug rehab in Kentucky during 2012.

Heroin – In recent year’s heroin addiction in Kentucky had been on the decline but as of late, heroin has become a significant problem. Treatment admissions have been in a steady increase since 2008. Heroin addiction accounted for over 12% of all treatment admission in 2012.

Club Drugs– Club drug abuse and addiction is a significant problem in Kentucky.

"I had no idea why my son, who have watched go from the most gracious caring kid, to a lying thieving con artist who I didn't want to wipe my feet on. Heroin addiction has to be the worst thing a family can go through, not only did you guide me through what is probably the worst experience I have ever had, you followed up to make sure we were doing okay. You and the counselors at AddictionWatch are truly an asset to society." - HS

"When my daughter finally appeared on our doorstep, thanks to your advice we knew exactly what to do. I felt as though I have known you for years, and we are forever grateful to the knowledge we have gained through your service. My daughter's prescription addiction, lead to a heroin addiction and she was doing unimaginable things to support her habit; it was a life of hell. She has been in the program you referred us to and we are already seeing drastic changes for the better. Thanks so much!" - BC
