Louisiana Addiction and Substance Abuse Problems

The National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) is an excellent resource for statistics on drug abuse in Louisiana. The most recent report for 2010-2011m which was published in 2012 indicates over 300,000 people needed but unable to receive treatment. The following year 14,537 addicts entered rehabs in Louisiana. Drug abuse and addiction in Louisiana is widespread. Here is the breakdown of the drug problems in Louisiana.

Prescription Drugs – Prescription drug addiction in Louisiana is responsible for the biggest percentage of treatment admissions. Per the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration ( SAMHSA) Treatment Episode Data Set ( TEDS) 3,024 addicts entered treatment in Louisiana in 2012 for “ other opiates”. The term “other opiates” is used to indicate any opiate other than heroin. Other opiates are typically prescription painkillers. The NSDUH reports that 180,000 people used prescription painkillers for non-medical reasons in 2010-2011.

Marijuana Marijuana addiction treatment in Louisiana is second only to prescription drugs for treatment admissions. Marijuana is the most abused illicit drug in Louisiana. While pro-marijuana advocates negate marijuana is a gateway drug reports would indicate otherwise.

On top of that, new and improved indoor grow methods have caused a much higher quantity and access to marijuana that has a higher concentration of Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) which is the chemical that causes the euphoria.

2,345 people entered treatment for marijuana addiction in 2012. Although the NSDUH reports over 1.5 million (41%) people in Louisiana feel smoking marijuana can be a “great risk”, there are approximately 37,000 people that try marijuana for the first time each year.

The influence of pro-marijuana advocates is evident as the number of treatment admissions for marijuana addiction is higher, yet less people feel it can be a great risk for addiction. The 2007-2008 NSDUH report indicated 1.58 million (45.43%) people felt a great risk of smoking marijuana.

Alcohol – Alcohol has always been a big problem in Louisiana but in recent years alcohol treatment admissions are third behind prescription painkillers and marijuana. There are more people needing treatment for alcohol addiction in Louisiana however. NSDUH reports 220,000 people who need treatment for alcohol addiction and are unable to receive it.

According to the State of Louisiana report on underage drinking binge drinking is a major problem among high school seniors. Reports show 25% of Louisiana eighth graders consumed alcohol in the previous 30 days, with over 10% having binge drank in the past two weeks. Underage drinking in Louisiana cost taxpayers $1.3 billion in 2010.

Cocaine – Cocaine addiction treatment in Louisiana is a significant problem. Of course, if you are addicted to cocaine it has probably consumed your life. Cocaine has been found in both powder cocaine and crack cocaine forms throughout the state. Powder cocaine is primarily found in the more rural areas, while crack cocaine is found in the more urban areas.

Crack cocaine addiction is a significantly larger problem and accounts for ten percent of the overall treatment admissions in Louisiana with 1,457 people seeking treatment in 2012. Adding to that are the 476 cocaine addicts struggling with an addiction to powder cocaine.

Methamphetamine – Methamphetamine addiction in Louisiana is a problem and some law enforcement agencies fear it will be replacing crack cocaine. The costs are much cheaper and the high lasts much longer. In 2012 just over 700 meth addicts received treatment for meth addiction in Louisiana.

Heroin – Heroin addiction treatment in Louisiana has risen dramatically in recent years. This rise is due in part to more availability and lower costs than prescription opiate pain killers. Over 1,500 heroin addicts were able to get treatment for heroin addiction in 2012. The majority of people addicted to heroin in Louisiana can be found in New Orleans and surrounding areas. Most of the heroin found in this area comes from South America.

Club Drugs – Club drugs in Louisiana have held an even pattern in recent years as far as treatment admissions go. There are reports from drug rehab centers in Louisiana that they are experiencing an increase in the availability and abuse of MDMA (ecstasy), Ketamine, Rohypnol, LSD, and GHB..

Letters of Thanks

"I have to tell you I was not ready to accept what you had to say, at all. I couldn't believe nor did I like what I was hearing. At first you really made me mad, but as things progressed what you were telling me became ever so true. My husband's alcoholism was tearing our family apart. Thanks for your honesty and your willingness to put up with my unbelievable attitude. Its people like you who make the world go round, only in a saner manner! Thanks again! " - DH

"I had no idea why my son, who have watched go from the most gracious caring kid, to a lying thieving con artist who I didn't want to wipe my feet on. Heroin addiction has to be the worst thing a family can go through, not only did you guide me through what is probably the worst experience I have ever had, you followed up to make sure we were doing okay. You and the counselors at AddictionWatch are truly an asset to society." - HS

"When my daughter finally appeared on our doorstep, thanks to your advice we knew exactly what to do. I felt as though I have known you for years, and we are forever grateful to the knowledge we have gained through your service. My daughter's prescription addiction, lead to a heroin addiction and she was doing unimaginable things to support her habit; it was a life of hell. She has been in the program you referred us to and we are already seeing drastic changes for the better. Thanks so much!" - BC
