Overcoming drug or alcohol addiction in a treatment center is one of the most rewarding and spiritually uplifting accomplishments a drug or alcohol addict can achieve for themselves and their family. Once an addict has climbed out of the pit of hell called addiction and all that goes with it, there really is nothing they cannot accomplish. Once an addict feels better without using drugs or alcohol, he ceases to need the effects that drugs and alcohol provide, and can overcome his addiction. A comprehensive treatment center improves an addicts abilities and he or she will be successful in addiction recovery.

Each treatment center has its own rehabilitation philosophy, criteria, history, rules, facilities, credentials, fee structure and most importantly success. Each drug rehab program should keep the best interest of the drug addict or alcoholic in mind to ensure permanent addiction recovery is obtained.

Treatment Centers vary in length, modality and there are as many kinds of drug and alcohol addiction treatment centers as there are facilities. The information provided here is an attempt to explain the various kinds of programs so you can find a treatment center for your benefit in achieving addiction recovery and determining a course of action for you or your loved one.

Treatment Center methods

Although there are numerous treatment center options available, a drug or alcohol rehab program has certain traits depending on the training and philosophy of the addiction counselor and mental health practitioners.

The National Institute of Drug Abuse has influence over a large sector of the substance abuse treatment field. This influence drives the treatment options available, specifically in the state and federal funded drug and alcohol rehab programs. This government entity supports the psychiatric approach to treating substance abuse, drug addiction and alcoholism as a brain disease. The studies conducted purport addiction is a brain disease due to the alteration of the natural flow of neurotransmitters that can cause depression, anxiety and mood swings. All of these symptoms are a result of taking drugs and can correct themselves in due course if a proper treatment center is obtained.

The state and federal funded treatment center follows this modality since this is where the money comes from and why the guidelines are adhered to. This method of treatment has yet to produce a substantial success in addiction recovery and often produces addiction to a multitude of the drugs prescribed in a state funded program.

The treatment center options available in United States include the twelve step treatment center, the dual diagnosis treatment center, the Christian of faith based treatment center, the wilderness treatment center and the bio-physical/social education treatment center.

The treatment center options described below are most abundant with the wilderness treatment option having only a few drug rehabilitation or life skills programs in the Mid West.

The Twelve Step Treatment center

The traditional twelve step treatment center encompasses about 90% of the substance abuse treatment, drug rehabilitation and alcohol rehab options available. This type addiction treatment program uses the Alcoholics Anonymous philosophy and achieves on average a 2-8 % success rates and can reach 16-20% if all follow up meeting and sponsor requirements are met.

Dual Diagnosis Treatment Center

Treatment center using the dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder philosophy which is basically a twelve step program used for the substance abuse problem with psychiatric addition that believes the underlying mental emotional problem that causes the addiction. These drug rehab or alcohol rehab centers medicate based on a diagnosis given while the addict is still under the effects of the drugs or alcohol and are often incorrect.

Studies given by the National Institute of Drug Abuse show that drugs and alcohol affect the natural function of the brain, is directly related to how a person thinks and feels and takes at least 90 to 100 days to correct. So with that in mind any diagnosis given during that time would be based on the affects of the drugs which is going to change as the brain and body start to recover

Our addiction counselors experience a high volume of calls from people who have used this type treatment center and have become addicted to the drug prescribed.

Christian or Faith Based Treatment Center

The third type treatment center is the religious or faith based treatment program. These drug rehabilitation and addiction treatment programs use non-denominational Christian values to help someone overcome addiction to drugs and alcohol and are typically 12-18 months long.

Bio-physical/Social Educational Treatment Center

The fourth type drug rehabilitation or substance abuse treatment center is the bio-physical/social education modality. This type treatment center restores the nutritional deficiencies created by drugs and alcohol with vitamin therapy, removes the toxins stored in the body that cause drug cravings, anxiety and depression with a body purification program, then the underlying mental emotional issues are addressed, and finally the addict learns how to handle life without the need for drugs and alcohol.

There are various other types of treatment centers, adolescent or youth treatment centers, wilderness treatment centers and the hospital based treatment center that is associated with medical detox and quite possibly psych wards.

Long term, Extended Care Treatment Center

Long term extended care program are designed for addicts and achieve a much higher success than typical 28 day drug rehabilitation programs. The length of stay is usually a minimum of 90 days and as long as one year. Oftentimes the addict that requires a long term stay are on the verge of collapse. These programs are designed to take the user out of their environment for an extended period of time in hopes that they will make a complete recovery with little chance for relapse.

Intensive Outpatient (IOP) Treatment Centers.

IOP is attending group and individual counseling sessions at a clinic, several times per week., others are daily treatment classes. Outpatient, also known as Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), for many this is the right step towards addiction recovery. Some insurance companies require someone to attend IOP first and will only approve of inpatient, full-time rehab after IOP has been unsuccessful.

Partial Hospitalization Programs (PHP) Treatment Centers

Attending group and individual counseling sessions at a hospital based drug rehabilitation program or treatment center, either all morning or all afternoon, 5 times per week. And some are 9 to 5, Monday through Friday. Partial Hospitalization Programs (PHP) are mostly held in hospital based programs, as a step down between detox and IOP.

Inpatient Residential Treatment Centers

Inpatient is the level that gets the most attention. Most have a detox as a part of their services; others will send someone who needs detox to a facility nearby and then be readmitted. Clients check in for some period of full time, stay there 24 hours a day. Each day consists of a variety of addiction treatment and rehabiliation  counseling, lectures, some form of exercise. Room and board is included.

Drug Rehabilitation, Addiction Recovery in a Treatment Center

The barriers in overcoming drug or alcohol addiction in a treatment center or drug rehab program can be monumental and in reality just aren’t that easy. Many people feel addiction recovery is an ongoing process and one should be in treatment the remainder of ones life. While this approach can be implemented and does achieve some success unfortunately the life skills needed to achieve long term permanent addiction recovery are left alone.

Some treatment centers will offer a follow-up program but only in one location which may make it difficult to use. Drug rehabilitation and substance abuse treatment centers should include a quality, continuing follow up to ensure addiction is overcome, permanently!

Letters of Thanks

"I have to tell you I was not ready to accept what you had to say, at all. I couldn't believe nor did I like what I was hearing. At first you really made me mad, but as things progressed what you were telling me became ever so true. My husband's alcoholism was tearing our family apart. Thanks for your honesty and your willingness to put up with my unbelievable attitude. Its people like you who make the world go round, only in a saner manner! Thanks again! " - DH

"I had no idea why my son, who have watched go from the most gracious caring kid, to a lying thieving con artist who I didn't want to wipe my feet on. Heroin addiction has to be the worst thing a family can go through, not only did you guide me through what is probably the worst experience I have ever had, you followed up to make sure we were doing okay. You and the counselors at AddictionWatch are truly an asset to society." - HS

"When my daughter finally appeared on our doorstep, thanks to your advice we knew exactly what to do. I felt as though I have known you for years, and we are forever grateful to the knowledge we have gained through your service. My daughter's prescription addiction, lead to a heroin addiction and she was doing unimaginable things to support her habit; it was a life of hell. She has been in the program you referred us to and we are already seeing drastic changes for the better. Thanks so much!" - BC
