How Addiction Begins

No one wants to become addicted to drugs and no family member or loved one wants to see someone they care about struggle. However, according to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) there are nearly 23 million people addicted. In addition, 10 million are reportedly struggling with prescription drug addiction and abuse and need addiction treatment help. The numbers go on from there.

Drug addiction and treatment is also one of the most costly problems out there. The National Institute On Drug Abuse (NIDA) reports that overall substance abuse costs are over $600 billion. The breakdown not only includes $181 billion for illegal drugs, but $193 billion for tobacco and $235 billion for alcohol.

Addiction is a problem that begins with some very specific circumstances that can be applied to almost any situation. They are as follows:

  • An individual encounters some type of problem in life that drugs or alcohol appear to be a solution for. This could be as simple as someone who is having trouble fitting it or as complicated as an individual that goes through some  major loss like a divorce or death.
  • The person takes the drug or drinks the alcohol and this seems to temporarily alleviate the problem.
  • Because the substances “seem” to work, the person assigns value to them.
  • As a result the addict continues to abuse these substances and because of their addictive qualities, become hooked on them.
  • Drugs and alcohol begin to become a central attention piece for the individual. They begin to think and act differently now being ‘under the influence.
  • The addiction progresses and worsens. The person’s problems become worse. They begin to build up more and more.

This is the cycle of addiction. It normally ends up with one or more of the following happening:

  1. The addict gets into legal trouble and goes to jail or prison. This is evident in the increasing rate of drug related crime. In fact, The Bureau of Justice Statistics reports that the arrest rate for drug possession grew 138%.
  2. The person receives treatment through a drug or alcohol rehab. This is usually the best case scenario however NIDA reports that over 23 million needed alcohol or drug addiction treatment in a two year period and only a little over 2 million people received alcohol or drug rehab help.
  3. The individual ends up losing their life over the addiction through overdose, or some other type of drug-related death. The Center for Disease Control (CDC)reports that drug overdose   deaths have tripled in the last 20 years with averages of over 30,000 people losing their lives to drug overdoses every year. In addition, drugs and alcohol are involved in 18% of motor vehicle driver deaths.

The Solution

The one and only solution for addiction is through treatment. Regardless of the type of addiction the person is struggling with, they can be helped and fully recover from any substance abuse problem. However, when looking for help it can become confusing with so many different addiction treatment options available. Here are the types of alcohol and drug addiction treatment and the results from each:

Long-Term Drug Addiction Treatment – This is usually the most effective type of help out there. It requires an individual going into a center for an extended period of time to deal with the physical and mental issues associated with the addiction. Long-term inpatient treatment is usually around 3 months and can last up to one year. Read More on Long-Term Drug Treatment

Short-Term Drug Treatment – This is similar to long-term treatment in that it is residential. However this type of program usually lasts less than 30 days. The popular 12 step model of drug rehab is one short-term treatment program. While it has been used for many years, short term alcohol or drug treatment only achieves somewhere around a 3 to 10% success rate. Read More on Short-Term Drug Treatment...

Detoxification – Also called ‘detox,’ this type of treatment is usually only a few days and mainly deals with weaning patients off medications that they are addicted to. Drugs are sometimes used during this process, however, if medically safe detox can be drug-free. Read More...

Half Way House or Therapeutic Community – This type of addiction treatment is often used as an aftercare option. It is where an individual is put in a real life living situation and the treatment is coupled with daily responsibilities like getting and holding a job, handling chores and household duties.
